Definition

Let AA be a nonassociative algebra over a commutative ring RR, and let (x,y,z)=(xy)z−x(yz)(x, y, z) = (xy)z - x(yz) be the associator. The nucleus of AA is the set N(A)={n∈A:(n,x,y)=(x,n,y)=(x,y,n)=0 for all x,y∈A}.N(A) = \set{n \in A : (n, x, y) = (x, n, y) = (x, y, n) = 0 \text{ for all } x, y \in A}.

Remarks

The sets where only the first, second or third condition is required are the left, middle and right nucleus. N(A)N(A) is an RR-submodule closed under the product, and the product on N(A)N(A) is associative. N(A)=AN(A) = A if and only if AA is associative. Example: if AA has a unit 11, then 1∈N(A)1 \in N(A), since (1x)y=xy=1(xy)(1x)y = xy = 1(xy), and similarly in the other positions. Non-example: in the octonions, the basis element ii is not in the nucleus, because (ij)ℓ≠i(jℓ)(ij)\ell \neq i(j\ell) for the standard units jj and ℓ\ell. In fact the nucleus of the octonions is ℝ1\R 1.
