Nullcline

Definition

Let UU be an open subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n, let f=(f1,…,fn):U→Rnf = (f_1, \ldots, f_n) : U \to \mathbb{R}^n be a function, and consider the autonomous system xj′=fj(x1,…,xn)x_j' = f_j(x_1, \ldots, x_n) for j=1,…,nj = 1, \ldots, n. For j∈{1,…,n}j \in \{1, \ldots, n\}, the jj-th nullcline of the system is the set Nj={x∈U:fj(x)=0}.N_j = \{x \in U : f_j(x) = 0\}.

Remarks

On the jj-th nullcline, the velocity has no component in the direction xjx_j. In the plane, trajectories cross the xx-nullcline vertically and the yy-nullcline horizontally. The equilibrium points are the points that lie on all the nullclines. The nullclines divide the phase plane into regions where each component of the velocity has a constant sign. For a planar linear system, the nullclines are lines through the origin, or the whole plane when a row of the matrix is zero.

Explanations

L1 human

A nullcline is the set of states where one of the variables stops changing for an instant. Drawing the nullclines is a quick first step to sketch a phase portrait.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
