statement theorem

Number of elements of each order in a cyclic group

Statement

Let GG be a cyclic group of finite order nn, and let dd be a positive divisor of nn. Then GG has exactly φ(d)\varphi(d) elements of order dd, where φ\varphi is Euler's totient function.

Remarks

Here φ(d)\varphi(d) is the number of integers kk with 1≤k≤d1 \leq k \leq d and gcd⁡(k,d)=1\gcd(k, d) = 1. The elements of order dd are the generators of the unique subgroup of order dd. Counting all elements by their orders gives the identity ∑d∣nφ(d)=n\sum_{d \mid n} \varphi(d) = n. In particular, GG has exactly φ(n)\varphi(n) generators.

Explanations

L1 human

In Z/6Z\mathbb{Z}/6\mathbb{Z}, the element 00 has order 11 and the element 33 has order 22. The elements 22 and 44 have order 33, and 11 and 55 have order 66. These counts are 1,1,2,21, 1, 2, 2, which are φ(1),φ(2),φ(3),φ(6)\varphi(1), \varphi(2), \varphi(3), \varphi(6). The totient function counts the elements of each order.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
