Cyclic group

Definition

A group GG is cyclic when there is an element g∈Gg \in G with G=⟨g⟩G = \langle g \rangle, where ⟨g⟩\langle g \rangle is the cyclic subgroup generated by gg. Such an element gg is called a generator of GG.

Remarks

The group (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +) is cyclic, and its generators are 11 and −1-1. The integers modulo nn under addition form a cyclic group of order nn, generated by 11. A cyclic group can have many generators: in the integers modulo nn, the generators are the residues coprime to nn. The circle group is not cyclic, because it is uncountable.

Explanations

L1 human

A cyclic group is a group in which each element is a power of one fixed element. The rotations of a regular polygon with nn sides form a cyclic group: each rotation is a power of the smallest rotation. The word "cyclic" comes from this picture of going around a circle.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
