statement theorem

Number of functions between finite sets

Statement

Let AA and BB be finite sets with ∣A∣=m|A| = m and ∣B∣=n|B| = n. Let BAB^A be the set of all functions from AA to BB. Then ∣BA∣=nm|B^A| = n^m.

Remarks

The case m=0m = 0 gives n0=1n^0 = 1: there is exactly one function from the empty set to BB, also when BB is empty. A function from AA to BB is a choice of one value in BB for each of the mm elements of AA. The rule of product then gives nmn^m. For a subset count, take B={0,1}B = \{0, 1\}. This gives the number of subsets of a finite set.

Explanations

L1 human

Each element of AA independently chooses its image among the nn elements of BB. For example, there are 32=93^2 = 9 functions from {1,2}\{1, 2\} to {a,b,c}\{a, b, c\}, because 11 has 3 choices and 22 has 3 choices.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Cardinality of a finite set definition
  2. Rule of product statement
  3. Number of functions between finite sets statement

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
