statement theorem

Number of subsets of a finite set

Statement

Let XX be a finite set with ∣X∣=n|X| = n. Let P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) be the power set of XX, the set of all subsets of XX. Then ∣P(X)∣=2n|\mathcal{P}(X)| = 2^n.

Remarks

The map that sends a subset SS to its indicator function 1S:X→{0,1}1_S : X \to \{0, 1\} is a bijection. Thus the count follows from the number of functions between finite sets. Grouped by size, the count gives the identity in the node sum of binomial coefficients.

Explanations

L1 human

To build a subset, decide for each element whether it is in or out. That is 2 options per element, so 2⋅2⋯2=2n2 \cdot 2 \cdots 2 = 2^n subsets. For {a,b}\{a, b\} these are ∅\varnothing, {a}\{a\}, {b}\{b\} and {a,b}\{a, b\}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
