Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space with inner product , and let be a continuous linear map. The numerical range of is the set The numerical radius of is .
Remarks
The numerical range is convex; this is the Toeplitz–Hausdorff theorem. The closure of contains the spectrum of . The numerical radius satisfies , with the operator norm. The operator is self-adjoint if and only if .
Example: let on . For with , , whose absolute value is at most and takes every value with . So is the closed disc of radius , and .
Non-example: for the same and , , which is not in ; the vector is not a unit vector.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
