Operator theory Spectral theory: foundations Theorem
Toeplitz–Hausdorff theorem
Builds on Numerical rangeHilbert spaceConvex set
Statement
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be a bounded linear operator. Then the numerical range is a convex subset of .
Remarks
Proof idea: take two points and of and let be the span of the unit vectors and . The numerical range of the compression of to is contained in and contains both points, so it is enough to treat a matrix. For a matrix, a direct computation shows that the numerical range is a closed elliptical disc with foci at the two eigenvalues. The disc may degenerate to a segment or a point.
Example: for on and a unit vector , one gets , so , a convex set. The set of eigenvalues is not convex, but fills in the segment between them.
Going deeper
For a student
The numerical range contains the eigenvalues of , and its closure contains the spectrum. With convexity, the closure of contains the convex hull of the spectrum, with equality for normal operators. The numerical radius satisfies , so it is a norm on bounded operators equivalent to the operator norm.
