One-way function
Builds on FunctionProbabilistic Turing machineP
Definition
A function is one-way if it has these two properties.
- Easy to compute: some deterministic algorithm computes in time polynomial in .
- Hard to invert: let be a probabilistic polynomial-time algorithm and let be a polynomial. Then for all sufficiently large ,
The probability is over uniform in and over the random bits of . The input gives the length in unary.
Remarks
The inverter succeeds if it finds any preimage of , not necessarily itself.
Example of a candidate: let on pairs of -bit numbers. Restricted to pairs of primes, this is believed to be one-way. On arbitrary pairs of numbers the situation differs, since a random product often has small factors that are easy to find.
Non-example: the identity function satisfies clause 1 but fails clause 2, since always inverts it.
If one-way functions exist, then . Indeed, if , a preimage of can be found bit by bit in polynomial time with an NP oracle.

What this page needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
