Definition
Let and be complex Hilbert spaces for a system and an environment . Let be a self-adjoint operator on the tensor product , the total Hamiltonian. Assume that it has the form where and act on and , and is the interaction. Let be a density operator on and . The system is then an open quantum system. Its state at time is the reduced density operator where is the partial trace over . The special case with and is a closed system, with .
Remarks
Example: a qubit coupled to a second qubit by , with , and . Then , and the off-diagonal entries of get multiplied by . So the reduced dynamics is not unitary: a pure superposition becomes mixed, for instance completely dephased at . Non-example: with and a product initial state, the reduced dynamics is the unitary evolution of alone, so the system is closed. When with fixed, each map is a quantum channel.
