Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be the algebra of bounded operators on . A concrete operator space is a linear subspace that is closed in the operator norm. For each , let be the space of matrices with entries in . A matrix acts on the direct sum of copies of , and its norm is the operator norm of this action: The operator space is together with this sequence of norms .
Remarks
Example: itself, and every norm-closed subalgebra of it, are operator spaces. Example: the set of matrices with is a closed subspace of , since every subspace of a finite-dimensional space is closed. Non-example: if is infinite-dimensional, the finite-rank operators form a subspace of that is not closed, so it is not an operator space. Its closure, the space of compact operators, is one. Abstractly, an operator space is a complex vector space with a complete norm on and norms on each with two properties. First, for and . Second, for and scalar matrices of size and of size . Ruan's theorem states that every such abstract operator space is completely isometric to a concrete one.
