Optical transfer function

Definition

Let an incoherent imaging system be linear and shift invariant on intensities, with point spread function h ⁣:ℝ2→[0,∞)h \colon \R^2 \to [0, \infty). Assume that hh is integrable and that ∫ℝ2h(x) dx>0\int_{\R^2} h(x) \, dx > 0. The optical transfer function of the system is the function H ⁣:ℝ2→ℂH \colon \R^2 \to \C given by H(ν)=∫ℝ2h(x) e−2πi ν⋅x dx∫ℝ2h(x) dx,H(\nu) = \frac{\int_{\R^2} h(x) \, e^{-2\pi i \, \nu \cdot x} \, dx}{\int_{\R^2} h(x) \, dx}, where ν∈ℝ2\nu \in \R^2 is a spatial frequency. Its modulus ∣H∣\abs{H} is the modulation transfer function, and its argument arg⁡H\arg H is the phase transfer function.

Remarks

So HH is the Fourier transform of hh, scaled so that H(0)=1H(0) = 1. Since h≥0h \ge 0, one has ∣H(ν)∣≤H(0)=1\abs{H(\nu)} \le H(0) = 1, and since hh is real, H(−ν)=H(ν)‾H(-\nu) = \overline{H(\nu)}. If the object intensity is ff, the image intensity is h∗fh * f, so the spectrum of the image is the spectrum of ff times HH, up to the constant factor ∫h\int h.

Example: the Gaussian blur h(x)=e−π∣x∣2h(x) = e^{-\pi \abs{x}^2} has ∫h=1\int h = 1 and Fourier transform e−π∣ν∣2e^{-\pi \abs{\nu}^2}. So H(ν)=e−π∣ν∣2H(\nu) = e^{-\pi \abs{\nu}^2}, which is real and positive, and the phase transfer function is 00.

Non-example: the constant function h=1h = 1 is not integrable on ℝ2\R^2, so the formula does not define an optical transfer function.

For an aberration-free system, HH is the autocorrelation of the pupil function, in scaled coordinates, normalised to 11 at the origin.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
