Order parameter
Builds on Gibbs measureIsing model
Definition
Let be the configuration space of a lattice system, and let be a group acting on that leaves the Hamiltonian invariant. Let be a finite-dimensional real vector space with a linear representation of . Assume that is the only vector of fixed by all . Let be a bounded observable with for all and . Let be an equilibrium state, that is an infinite-volume Gibbs measure. The order parameter of is the vector in . The state is disordered if and ordered if .
Remarks
If is invariant under , then for all , so . Hence an ordered state breaks the symmetry .
Example: for the Ising model on with zero field, acts by the global flip , , is the sign representation and . The flip sends to , so the equivariance holds. The order parameter is the magnetization ; at low temperature in the plus state it equals the spontaneous magnetization, which is positive for .
Non-example: the energy observable is unchanged by the flip. The trivial representation fixes every vector, which fails the condition on , and indeed at every temperature.
For the classical Heisenberg model, and the order parameter is a vector in .
