Definition
A Young function is a convex function with and as . Let be a measure space and let be a Young function. For a real or complex measurable function on , the Luxemburg norm is with . The Orlicz space is the set of measurable with , modulo equality almost everywhere.
Remarks
Example: for , is a Young function. The condition means . So with .
Non-example: is not a Young function, because it is not convex. On with Lebesgue measure the Luxemburg functional is then . It fails the triangle inequality: the indicator functions of and each get the value , but their sum gets the value .
A function lies in exactly when for some . With the Luxemburg norm, is a Banach space. Some authors allow Young functions with values in ; this includes as an Orlicz space.
