Example
Take moles of an ideal gas with constant molar heat capacity at constant volume and constant heat capacity ratio . Let be two volumes, with compression ratio . The air-standard Otto cycle has four steps, with temperatures at their start points:
- isentropic compression from to ;
- heat addition at constant volume (isochoric), absorbing ;
- isentropic expansion from back to ;
- heat rejection at constant volume , rejecting , back to the initial state.
The gas returns to its initial state, so this is a thermodynamic cycle. On the isentropes is constant, so and . Hence and the thermal efficiency is For and , . This is less than the Carnot value for the extreme temperatures and of the cycle, since .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
