Overdetermined system
Builds on System of linear equations
Definition
Let be a field. Let be an matrix over and let . The system of linear equations in the unknown is overdetermined if , that is, if it has more equations than unknowns.
Remarks
Example: the system , , over has equations and unknowns, so it is overdetermined; it is consistent, with the solution . Non-example: the system , has , so it is not overdetermined. If , then the column space of has dimension at most , so it is a proper subspace of . Hence there are right-hand sides for which the system is inconsistent. Over , the consistent right-hand sides form a proper subspace of , so a randomly chosen almost never gives a consistent system. Over , the least squares solutions are the solutions of the normal equations , which are always consistent. A system with fewer equations than unknowns is called underdetermined.
