Definition
Let be a prime number. For a nonzero rational number , let be its p-adic valuation, the integer with for integers not divisible by . The -adic absolute value is the map given by
Remarks
It is an absolute value on in the sense of fields:
- exactly when ;
- ;
- , which is stronger than the triangle inequality.
Example: and . Non-example: the map , without the minus sign, is not an absolute value. Indeed, it gives to both and , but to their sum , so the triangle inequality fails. Product formula: for every nonzero rational , , where is the usual absolute value.
