Definition
Let be a metric space, let , and let . For , a -packing of is a countable family of pairwise disjoint closed balls with centres and radii . The construction has three steps.
- , the supremum over all -packings of , and .
- The -dimensional packing measure of is
- The packing dimension of is .
Remarks
The limit in step 1 exists since decreases as decreases. The map is a metric outer measure, so it is a measure on the Borel sets. Some authors use the diameters of the balls instead of ; in the two agree.
Example: on with , a -packing of by intervals has total length at most , and packings with total length close to exist. So , and in fact is Lebesgue measure on .
Step 2 is needed: alone is not countably subadditive. The set has , because centres in a dense set can approximate any packing of . But it is a countable union of points, each with , so .
For , , where is defined by Hausdorff measure.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
