Palais–Smale compactness condition
Builds on Banach spaceFréchet derivativeContinuous dual space
Definition
Let be a real Banach space with continuous dual space . Let be continuously Fréchet differentiable, with derivative at . A Palais–Smale sequence for is a sequence in such that is bounded and . The functional satisfies the Palais–Smale condition if every Palais–Smale sequence for has a convergent subsequence.
Remarks
Example: on a real Hilbert space , let . Under the identification of with , the derivative is , so a Palais–Smale sequence satisfies , and the condition holds. Non-example: on . The sequence has and , but no subsequence converges. A common variant at a level , written , asks only for sequences with and . If satisfies the condition, then the set of critical points at any level is compact.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
