Manifolds and cell complexes Definition
Parallelizable manifold
Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension . A global frame on is a list of smooth vector fields on with the following property. For every , the vectors form a basis of the tangent space . The manifold is parallelizable if it has a global frame.
Remarks
Equivalently, the tangent bundle is isomorphic, as a smooth vector bundle, to the trivial bundle ; a global frame gives the isomorphism . Example: the circle is parallelizable. The vector field is tangent to and nonzero at every point, so it is a global frame for the -dimensional manifold . Every Lie group is parallelizable, by translating a basis of the tangent space at the identity. Non-example: is not parallelizable. A global frame would contain a nowhere-vanishing vector field, and by the hairy ball theorem no such field exists on . A parallelizable manifold is orientable, so the Möbius band is not parallelizable either.
