Definition

Let ℋ\mathcal H be a complex Hilbert space, and let KK be an index set of single-particle states. Let aka_k, k∈Kk \in K, be operators on ℋ\mathcal H with adjoints ak†a_k^\dagger. Write [A,B]=AB−BA[A, B] = AB - BA, {A,B}=AB+BA\set{A, B} = AB + BA, and δkl\delta_{kl} for the Kronecker delta.

  1. The aka_k satisfy parabose relations if [ak,{al†,am}]=2δklam[a_k, \set{a_l^\dagger, a_m}] = 2 \delta_{kl} a_m and [ak,{al,am}]=0[a_k, \set{a_l, a_m}] = 0 for all k,l,m∈Kk, l, m \in K.
  2. The aka_k satisfy parafermi relations if [ak,[al†,am]]=2δklam[a_k, [a_l^\dagger, a_m]] = 2 \delta_{kl} a_m and [ak,[al,am]]=0[a_k, [a_l, a_m]] = 0 for all k,l,m∈Kk, l, m \in K.
  3. A representation has order pp, a positive integer, if there is a unit vector ∣0⟩\lvert 0 \rangle with ak∣0⟩=0a_k \lvert 0 \rangle = 0 and akal†∣0⟩=p δkl∣0⟩a_k a_l^\dagger \lvert 0 \rangle = p \, \delta_{kl} \lvert 0 \rangle for all k,lk, l. Moreover ℋ\mathcal H must be spanned by the vectors obtained from ∣0⟩\lvert 0 \rangle by applying the al†a_l^\dagger.

Parastatistics of order pp is the statistics of particles whose creation and annihilation operators form such a representation of the parabose or parafermi relations.

Remarks

Example: ordinary bosons, with [ak,al†]=δkl[a_k, a_l^\dagger] = \delta_{kl} and [ak,al]=0[a_k, a_l] = 0, satisfy the parabose relations with p=1p = 1. Check: {al†,am}=2al†am+δlm\set{a_l^\dagger, a_m} = 2 a_l^\dagger a_m + \delta_{lm}, and [ak,2al†am]=2[ak,al†]am=2δklam[a_k, 2 a_l^\dagger a_m] = 2 [a_k, a_l^\dagger] a_m = 2 \delta_{kl} a_m; also akal†∣0⟩=δkl∣0⟩a_k a_l^\dagger \lvert 0 \rangle = \delta_{kl} \lvert 0 \rangle. Likewise ordinary fermions, with {ak,al†}=δkl\set{a_k, a_l^\dagger} = \delta_{kl} and {ak,al}=0\set{a_k, a_l} = 0, satisfy the parafermi relations with p=1p = 1.

Non-example: fermion operators do not satisfy the parabose relations. For a single mode, {a†,a}=1\set{a^\dagger, a} = 1, so [a,{a†,a}]=0≠2a[a, \set{a^\dagger, a}] = 0 \ne 2a.

The nn-particle states carry representations of the symmetric group SnS_n. For parafermions of order pp these are the irreducible representations whose Young diagrams have at most pp columns. For parabosons of order pp they are those whose Young diagrams have at most pp rows.
