Statement
Use the notation of twistor theory: , the form , and the line of a point . Let be the open set where . Let be the open set of points of complexified Minkowski space with , the forward tube. For an integer , let be the sheaf of holomorphic sections of the -th power of the dual of the tautological line bundle. Let be such that is an integer. Then there is a natural isomorphism, the Penrose transform, with domain the sheaf cohomology group . Its image is the space of holomorphic massless fields of helicity on . For these fields are the holomorphic solutions of the wave equation . For they are the totally symmetric spinor fields with . Here spinor indices are two-component indices, and is the derivative with respect to the entry of the matrix of .
Remarks
A class in is represented by a function , holomorphic on the intersection of two open sets and homogeneous of degree . The field is the contour integral over a loop in the line : The integrand is homogeneous of degree in , so the integral is well defined on the projective line. Differentiating under the integral sign produces factors , and contracting two of them gives ; this is why the field equations hold. The hard part of the proof is that the map is bijective, which uses the vanishing of suitable cohomology on the fibres of the correspondence. Example: for the fields are the solutions of the source-free Maxwell equations of one duality type, self-dual or anti-self-dual according to the convention. The theorem holds for more general pairs of open sets, with conditions on the topology of the fibres; the forward tube is the classical case.
Going deeper
For a student
The transform is the main example of the dictionary of twistor theory, in which differential equations on spacetime become cohomology on twistor space. The degree of homogeneity encodes the helicity, and fields of the other sign of helicity correspond to the cohomology of sheaves with other values of . Related transforms describe self-dual Yang–Mills fields through holomorphic vector bundles on twistor space, by the Ward correspondence.
