Definition
Let be a deformation of an open set , with deformation gradient and Jacobian . Let be the Cauchy stress tensor field on . For , write , and .
- The first Piola–Kirchhoff stress tensor at is .
- The second Piola–Kirchhoff stress tensor at is .
Remarks
Nanson's formula relates an oriented area element of the reference configuration to its image . It gives , so the tensor gives the current force per unit reference area. If is symmetric, then is symmetric, while is in general not symmetric. For , both tensors equal . For a rigid rotation with orthogonal and , one gets and : here is the Cauchy stress expressed in the rotated material frame. The tensor is work-conjugate to the Green–Lagrange strain, and is work-conjugate to .
