Definition
Let be smooth, and consider the family of scalar equations with parameter . Assume that is odd in : for all and . Then , so is an equilibrium point for every . The family has a pitchfork bifurcation at if:
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Under these conditions, besides , the equilibria near form a curve with even, and . So on one side of there is a symmetric pair of new equilibria, and the stability of changes at . The bifurcation is supercritical when the new equilibria are stable and subcritical when they are unstable.
Example: . It is odd in , , and . The new equilibria are for , and they are stable since . The equation gives the subcritical case.
Non-example: is not odd in , so the symmetry hypothesis fails; it gives a transcritical bifurcation. Without the symmetry, a small perturbation such as breaks the pitchfork into a saddle-node and a separate branch.
