Mechanics of deformable solids Definition
Poisson's ratio
Definition
Let a homogeneous isotropic linear elastic material have Lamé parameters and , with and , so that as well. Consider the state of uniaxial stress with , where is the Cauchy stress tensor, and let be the strain that produces it. The Poisson's ratio of the material is
Remarks
Example: for one finds and , and the quotient gives the formula. For and (in GPa, steel) it gives .
Non-example: in uniaxial strain the sides are held fixed, , and the quotient is not Poisson's ratio; the lateral faces must be free of stress.
Positivity of the elasticity tensor, and , is equivalent to and . The value is the incompressible limit, and materials with are called auxetic. The volume change in uniaxial tension is .
