Prandtl–Meyer function

Definition
Let be the ratio of specific heats of an ideal gas. The Prandtl–Meyer function is the function of the Mach number given by It is the solution of with .
Remarks
Consider a plane, steady, isentropic supersonic flow turned through a small angle across a Mach wave. In an expansion its Mach number changes so that , and this is where the function comes from. Example: for and , one has . The function is strictly increasing, and as , which is about for . Non-example: for the expression is not defined over the reals, since is imaginary; subsonic flows do not turn by simple waves.
