Definition
A preadditive category is a category with an abelian group structure, written additively, on each set . Composition must be bilinear: for all , and .
Remarks
Equivalently, a preadditive category is a category enriched over the monoidal category of abelian groups with the tensor product. The zero element of is the zero morphism , and bilinearity gives and . Some authors call these categories -categories.
Example: for a ring , the category of left -modules with pointwise addition is preadditive. The sum of homomorphisms is a homomorphism, and because is additive, which gives the first identity; the second holds by definition of the sum.
Example: a ring is a preadditive category with one object , with and composition the multiplication of .
Non-example: the category of sets is not preadditive, since is empty and an abelian group is never empty.
