Definition
Let be a category, let be its opposite category, and let be the category of sets and functions. A presheaf on is a functor . So assigns a set to each object and a function to each morphism , with and . A morphism of presheaves is a natural transformation, and the presheaves on form the category , often written .
Remarks
Example: let be a topological space and let be the category whose objects are the open sets of , with one morphism when . Let be the set of continuous functions and let be restriction . Restriction to is the identity and restricting to then to equals restricting to , so is a presheaf.
Non-example: on , let be the set of all functions and send to extension by zero . This is a functor , but its maps go from to , so it is covariant and not a presheaf on .
Every hom functor is a presheaf, and a presheaf on is a presheaf on in the sense of sheaf theory.
