Definition
Let be a relative CW complex, and let be the union of with the cells of of dimension at most . Let and let be an -connected space; if , assume also that is abelian. Let be a map. Since for , the map extends to a map . The primary obstruction of is the class where is the obstruction cocycle of from obstruction theory.
Remarks
The class does not depend on the choice of . Indeed, any two extensions of to are homotopic relative to on , since is -connected. The difference of the two extensions on the -cells changes by a coboundary. The map extends to if and only if . If has no cells of dimension above , then extends to if and only if .
Example: let , with , and the identity. Here and is a generator, so does not extend.
Non-example: let be not -connected, for instance with . Then need not extend over at all, so no class in degree is defined from alone.
The same construction applies to a fibration over a CW complex with -connected fibre . It gives the primary obstruction to a section, a class in of the base with coefficients in , local in general.
