Definition

Let Ω\Omega be an open set in ℝn\R^n. Let P=∑∣α∣≤maα(x) ∂αP = \sum_{\abs{\alpha} \le m} a_\alpha(x) \, \partial^\alpha be a linear differential operator of order mm on Ω\Omega, with multi-indices α\alpha. The principal symbol of PP is the following function of x∈Ωx \in \Omega and ξ∈ℝn\xi \in \R^n. σm(P)(x,ξ)=∑∣α∣=maα(x) ξα.\sigma_m(P)(x, \xi) = \sum_{\abs{\alpha} = m} a_\alpha(x) \, \xi^\alpha. Here ξα=ξ1α1⋯ξnαn\xi^\alpha = \xi_1^{\alpha_1} \cdots \xi_n^{\alpha_n}. For each fixed xx, it is a homogeneous polynomial of degree mm in ξ\xi.

Remarks

Example: for P=∂x2−∂y2+5∂x+1P = \partial_x^2 - \partial_y^2 + 5 \partial_x + 1 on ℝ2\R^2, the order is 22 and σ2(P)(x,ξ)=ξ12−ξ22\sigma_2(P)(x, \xi) = \xi_1^2 - \xi_2^2; the terms 5∂x5 \partial_x and 11 do not contribute. Non-example: the full polynomial ξ12−ξ22+5ξ1+1\xi_1^2 - \xi_2^2 + 5 \xi_1 + 1 is not the principal symbol, because it keeps the lower-order terms. Many texts write P=∑aα(x)DαP = \sum a_\alpha(x) D^\alpha with Dj=−i∂jD_j = -i \partial_j and define the principal symbol as ∑∣α∣=maα(x)ξα\sum_{\abs{\alpha} = m} a_\alpha(x) \xi^\alpha in those coefficients; this differs from the definition above by the factor imi^m. The vanishing of the principal symbol, and so the characteristic variety, is the same in all conventions. On a manifold, the principal symbol is a well-defined function on the cotangent bundle.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
