Definition
Let and be categories. The product category is defined as follows:
- its objects are the pairs with an object of and an object of ;
- a morphism is a pair with in and in ;
- composition is , and the identity of is .
Remarks
The category axioms hold because they hold in each coordinate. There are projection functors and . Example: a monoid is a category with one object; the product of the one-object categories of and is the one-object category of the product monoid . Indeed its only object is the pair of the two objects, and its morphisms are the pairs multiplied coordinatewise. The set of objects of is the Cartesian product of the sets of objects when both categories are small. A morphism is an isomorphism exactly when and are both isomorphisms.
