Definition
Let be a category and let be a family of objects of indexed by a set . A product of the family is an object with morphisms for , called projections, with the following property. For every object and every family of morphisms , there is exactly one morphism with for all . The object is written , or for two objects, and is written or .
Remarks
A product is the limit of the diagram whose shape is the set seen as a category with only identity morphisms. So it is unique up to unique isomorphism, and the product of the empty family is a terminal object.
Example: in the category of sets, the Cartesian product with the coordinate maps is a product. Given and , the map satisfies , and any such must have these coordinates. In the category of groups the product is the direct product, and in the category of topological spaces it is the Cartesian product with the product topology.
Non-example: in the category of fields, and have no product. Field homomorphisms preserve the characteristic, so no field has morphisms to both and .
