Definition

Let ๐’ž\mathcal{C} and ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} be categories, and let ๐’Ÿop\mathcal{D}^{\mathrm{op}} be the opposite category of ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D}. A profunctor PP from ๐’ž\mathcal{C} to ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D}, written Pโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†›๐’ŸP \colon \mathcal{C} \nrightarrow \mathcal{D}, is a functor Pโ€‰โฃ:๐’Ÿopร—๐’žโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญP \colon \mathcal{D}^{\mathrm{op}} \times \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set} on the product category. A morphism of profunctors is a natural transformation between such functors.

Remarks

Conventions differ: some authors call the same functor a profunctor from ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} to ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. For small ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} it is the same as a functor ๐’žโ†’[๐’Ÿop,๐’๐ž๐ญ]\mathcal{C} \to [\mathcal{D}^{\mathrm{op}}, \mathbf{Set}], from ๐’ž\mathcal{C} to presheaves on ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D}. Example: the hom functor Homโก๐’žโ€‰โฃ:๐’žopร—๐’žโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญ\Hom_{\mathcal{C}} \colon \mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}} \times \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set} is a profunctor from ๐’ž\mathcal{C} to ๐’ž\mathcal{C}, the identity profunctor. Example: a functor Fโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’๐’ŸF \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D} gives the profunctor (d,c)โ†ฆHomโก๐’Ÿ(d,F(c))(d, c) \mapsto \Hom_{\mathcal{D}}(d, F(c)) from ๐’ž\mathcal{C} to ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D}. Non-example: for the same FF, the functor (d,c)โ†ฆHomโก๐’Ÿ(F(c),d)(d, c) \mapsto \Hom_{\mathcal{D}}(F(c), d) is covariant in dd and contravariant in cc. So it is not a profunctor from ๐’ž\mathcal{C} to ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D}; it is a profunctor from ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} to ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. For Pโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†›๐’ŸP \colon \mathcal{C} \nrightarrow \mathcal{D} and Qโ€‰โฃ:๐’Ÿโ†›โ„ฐQ \colon \mathcal{D} \nrightarrow \mathcal{E} with ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} small, the composite is given by the coend (Qโˆ˜P)(e,c)=โˆซdโˆˆ๐’ŸQ(e,d)ร—P(d,c)(Q \circ P)(e, c) = \int^{d \in \mathcal{D}} Q(e, d) \times P(d, c). Composition is associative and unital only up to natural isomorphism.
