Example

A particle of mass mm moves in the vertical plane with coordinates (x,z)(x, z), under uniform gravity (0,−mg)(0, -mg) with g>0g > 0 and without air resistance. It starts at the origin at time 00 with speed v>0v > 0 at the angle θ∈(0,π/2)\theta \in (0, \pi/2) above the horizontal. Newton's second law gives x¨=0\ddot x = 0 and z¨=−g\ddot z = -g, so x(t)=vtcos⁡θ,z(t)=vtsin⁡θ−12gt2.x(t) = v t \cos\theta, \qquad z(t) = v t \sin\theta - \tfrac12 g t^2. Check: m(x¨,z¨)=(0,−mg)m(\ddot x, \ddot z) = (0, -mg), and (x(0),z(0))=(0,0)(x(0), z(0)) = (0, 0), (x˙(0),z˙(0))=(vcos⁡θ,vsin⁡θ)(\dot x(0), \dot z(0)) = (v\cos\theta, v\sin\theta). Eliminating t=x/(vcos⁡θ)t = x/(v \cos\theta) gives the path z=xtan⁡θ−g2v2cos⁡2θ x2,z = x \tan\theta - \frac{g}{2 v^2 \cos^2\theta}\, x^2, a parabola. The particle returns to z=0z = 0 at time 2vsin⁡θ/g2 v \sin\theta / g, at the distance R=v2sin⁡(2θ)/gR = v^2 \sin(2\theta)/g. The range RR is largest for θ=π/4\theta = \pi/4, and the greatest height is v2sin⁡2θ/(2g)v^2 \sin^2\theta/(2g).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
