Projection

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A projection on VV is an endomorphism P ⁣:V→VP \colon V \to V with P∘P=PP \circ P = P.

Remarks

If PP is a projection, then V=im⁡P⊕ker⁡PV = \im P \oplus \ker P, and PP acts as the identity on im⁡P\im P. Conversely, for each direct sum V=U⊕WV = U \oplus W, the map u+w↦uu + w \mapsto u is a projection with image UU and kernel WW. If PP is a projection, then I−PI - P is the projection with image ker⁡P\ker P and kernel im⁡P\im P. In an inner product space, an orthogonal projection is a projection whose kernel is orthogonal to its image.

Explanations

L1 human

A projection maps space onto a subspace and leaves the vectors of that subspace where they are. Projecting a second time changes nothing. The shadow of an object on the floor, in light from a fixed direction, is a picture of a projection.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
