Definition
Fix a signature and let be a class of algebras of this signature. An algebra is projective in if the following holds. For all , every surjective homomorphism and every homomorphism , there is a homomorphism with .
Remarks
In a variety, epimorphisms of the category of algebras need not be surjective. So this notion can differ from a projective object of the category; universal algebra uses the surjective version. In a variety, an algebra is projective exactly when it is a retract of a free algebra.
Example: every free algebra on a set in a variety is projective. Given surjective and , choose with for each . The homomorphism with satisfies , since both sides agree on the generators . In the variety of modules over a ring, the projective algebras are the projective modules.
Non-example: is not projective in the variety of abelian groups. Take the reduction map and . Every homomorphism is zero, because has no element of order , so .
