Definition
Let be a field and let be an integer. On , let when for some ; this is an equivalence relation. The projective -space over is the set of equivalence classes The class of is written , and the are its homogeneous coordinates.
Remarks
Equivalently, is the set of one-dimensional linear subspaces of the vector space . More generally, denotes the set of one-dimensional subspaces of a vector space .
Example: in , because . Over with its usual topology, is the real projective space.
Non-example: is not a point of , since the zero vector is excluded.
For each , the set is in bijection with through , and the cover . The complement of is , a copy of , the hyperplane at infinity.
