Proof of Euler's four-square identity by expansion
Builds on Commutative ring
Proof
We expand both sides, using the laws of a commutative ring.
- Call the four expressions on the right , in the order written. Each is a sum of four terms .
- The index pairs in the terms are: in , ; in , ; in , ; in , .
- So each of the pairs occurs in exactly one , and in exactly one term.
- For in a commutative ring, .
- By steps 3 and 4, the squares of the terms add up to . This is the left side .
- It remains to show that the cross terms cancel. Each cross term is with and . We list the coefficients of each such monomial, without the factor .

- Each has cross terms, so there are in all. Steps 7 to 12 account for all , in pairs with opposite signs.
- For example, in the terms and give . In the terms and give . The other lines are read off in the same way.
- So all cross terms cancel, and equals the left side.
Idea
Each product appears in exactly one of the four squares, so the squared terms give the product of the two sums. The signs are arranged, as in the multiplication of quaternions, so that the cross terms cancel in pairs.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
