Proof

We compute one dot product in two ways.

  1. Let AA, BB, CC be distinct points, and let OO be the midpoint of AA and CC, so O=12(A+C)O = \frac{1}{2}(A + C). Put u=A−Ou = A - O and z=O−Bz = O - B.
  2. Then C−O=−uC - O = -u, so A−B=u+zA - B = u + z and C−B=−u+zC - B = -u + z.
  3. Hence the dot product is (A−B)⋅(C−B)=(z+u)⋅(z−u)=∥z∥2−∥u∥2=∥B−O∥2−∥A−O∥2(A - B) \cdot (C - B) = (z + u) \cdot (z - u) = \norm{z}^2 - \norm{u}^2 = \norm{B - O}^2 - \norm{A - O}^2.
  4. The vectors A−BA - B and C−BC - B are nonzero, since B≠AB \neq A and B≠CB \neq C. By the definition of the angle and the criterion for perpendicular vectors, ∠ABC=π/2\angle ABC = \pi/2 if and only if (A−B)⋅(C−B)=0(A - B) \cdot (C - B) = 0.
  5. By steps 3 and 4, ∠ABC=π/2\angle ABC = \pi/2 if and only if ∥B−O∥=∥A−O∥\norm{B - O} = \norm{A - O}.
  6. Direct statement: AA, BB, CC lie on a circle whose centre is OO. So ∥B−O∥\norm{B - O} and ∥A−O∥\norm{A - O} are both the radius, and step 5 gives ∠ABC=π/2\angle ABC = \pi/2.
  7. Converse: if ∠ABC=π/2\angle ABC = \pi/2, then step 5 gives ∥B−O∥=∥A−O∥=12∥A−C∥\norm{B - O} = \norm{A - O} = \frac{1}{2}\norm{A - C}. This radius is positive since A≠CA \neq C.
  8. The circle with the diameter ACAC is the circle with the centre OO and the radius 12∥A−C∥\frac{1}{2}\norm{A - C}. By step 7, BB lies on it.

Idea

Measured from the centre OO, the two sides of the angle at BB are z+uz + u and z−uz - u. Their dot product is the difference of the squares of ∥z∥\norm{z} and ∥u∥\norm{u}. It vanishes exactly when BB is as far from OO as AA is.
