statement proposition

Vectors are perpendicular if and only if their dot product is zero

Statement

Let nn be a positive integer, and let uu and vv be nonzero vectors in Rn\mathbb{R}^n, with dot product u⋅v=u1v1+⋯+unvnu \cdot v = u_1 v_1 + \dots + u_n v_n. Let θ\theta be the angle between uu and vv. Then u⋅v=0u \cdot v = 0 if and only if θ=π/2\theta = \pi / 2.

Remarks

The proof uses the geometric formula for the dot product: u⋅v=∥u∥ ∥v∥cos⁡θu \cdot v = \|u\| \, \|v\| \cos \theta with ∥u∥≠0\|u\| \neq 0 and ∥v∥≠0\|v\| \neq 0, and cos⁡θ=0\cos \theta = 0 for 0≤θ≤π0 \leq \theta \leq \pi only when θ=π/2\theta = \pi / 2. Two vectors uu and vv with u⋅v=0u \cdot v = 0 are called orthogonal. With this word, the zero vector is orthogonal to each vector. In Mathlib the angle with the zero vector is π/2\pi / 2, so the equivalence holds there for all vectors.

Explanations

L1 human

This gives a quick test for a right angle. The vectors (2,1)(2, 1) and (−1,2)(-1, 2) have dot product −2+2=0-2 + 2 = 0, so they are perpendicular. You do not need to draw them or measure an angle.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
