statement proposition

The cross product is perpendicular to its factors

Statement

Let aa and bb be vectors in R3\mathbb{R}^3, and let a×ba \times b be their cross product. Let u⋅v=u1v1+u2v2+u3v3u \cdot v = u_1 v_1 + u_2 v_2 + u_3 v_3 be the dot product. Then a⋅(a×b)=0andb⋅(a×b)=0.a \cdot (a \times b) = 0 \quad \text{and} \quad b \cdot (a \times b) = 0.

Remarks

By the test with the dot product, a×ba \times b is perpendicular to aa and to bb when all three vectors are nonzero. The proof is a direct computation. For example, a⋅(a×b)=a1(a2b3−a3b2)+a2(a3b1−a1b3)+a3(a1b2−a2b1)a \cdot (a \times b) = a_1(a_2 b_3 - a_3 b_2) + a_2(a_3 b_1 - a_1 b_3) + a_3(a_1 b_2 - a_2 b_1), and the six terms cancel in pairs. If aa and bb are linearly independent, then a×ba \times b is a normal vector of the plane through 00 that contains aa and bb.

Lay two pencils flat on a table, starting at the same point. Their cross product points straight up from the table, or straight down. So it makes a right angle with each pencil.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
