Proof

We write down an explicit basis of Hom⁡F(V,W)\Hom_F(V, W) with dim⁡V⋅dim⁡W\dim V \cdot \dim W elements.

  1. Let n=dim⁡Vn = \dim V and m=dim⁡Wm = \dim W. Let (b1,…,bn)(b_1, \dots, b_n) be a basis of VV and (c1,…,cm)(c_1, \dots, c_m) a basis of WW.
  2. Write δjk=1\delta_{jk} = 1 if j=kj = k and δjk=0\delta_{jk} = 0 if j≠kj \ne k.
  3. For 1≤i≤m1 \le i \le m and 1≤j≤n1 \le j \le n, the extension of values on a basis gives a linear map Eij ⁣:V→WE_{ij} \colon V \to W with Eij(bk)=δjkciE_{ij}(b_k) = \delta_{jk} c_i for 1≤k≤n1 \le k \le n.
  4. These mnmn maps lie in the space of linear maps Hom⁡F(V,W)\Hom_F(V, W). Its operations are pointwise.
  5. The maps EijE_{ij} span Hom⁡F(V,W)\Hom_F(V, W). Let T∈Hom⁡F(V,W)T \in \Hom_F(V, W). For each kk, write T(bk)=∑i=1maikciT(b_k) = \sum_{i=1}^m a_{ik} c_i with aik∈Fa_{ik} \in F.
  6. Let S=∑i=1m∑j=1naijEijS = \sum_{i=1}^m \sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij} E_{ij}. By the pointwise operations, S(bk)=∑i,jaijδjkci=∑i=1maikci=T(bk)S(b_k) = \sum_{i,j} a_{ij} \delta_{jk} c_i = \sum_{i=1}^m a_{ik} c_i = T(b_k) for each kk.
  7. So SS and TT are linear maps that agree on a basis. By the uniqueness part of the same result, T=ST = S.
  8. The maps EijE_{ij} are linearly independent. Suppose ∑i,jaijEij=0\sum_{i,j} a_{ij} E_{ij} = 0, the zero map, with aij∈Fa_{ij} \in F.
  9. Evaluating at bkb_k, as in step 6, gives ∑i=1maikci=0\sum_{i=1}^m a_{ik} c_i = 0. Since (ci)(c_i) is linearly independent, aik=0a_{ik} = 0 for all ii. This holds for each kk.
  10. By steps 5 to 9, (Eij)1≤i≤m, 1≤j≤n(E_{ij})_{1 \le i \le m,\, 1 \le j \le n} is a basis of Hom⁡F(V,W)\Hom_F(V, W) with mnmn elements.
  11. So Hom⁡F(V,W)\Hom_F(V, W) is finite-dimensional, and its dimension is mn=dim⁡V⋅dim⁡Wmn = \dim V \cdot \dim W.

Idea

A linear map is fixed by the images of the basis vectors of VV, and each image has mm coordinates. So a linear map is described by mnmn free scalars, the entries of its matrix. The maps EijE_{ij} are the maps whose matrix has a single entry 11.
