Proof of the divisibility rule for 11

Builds on Congruence modulo nDivisibilityCongruence is compatible with powersCongruence is compatible with multiplicationCongruence is compatible with addition

Proof

  1. Let n=∑i=0kdi10in = \sum_{i=0}^{k} d_i 10^i with decimal digits d0,…,dkd_0, \dots, d_k. Let A=∑i=0k(−1)idi=d0−d1+d2−⋯+(−1)kdkA = \sum_{i=0}^{k} (-1)^i d_i = d_0 - d_1 + d_2 - \dots + (-1)^k d_k be the alternating digit sum.
  2. Since 10−(−1)=1110 - (-1) = 11, the number 1111 divides 10−(−1)10 - (-1). So 10≡−1(mod11)10 \equiv -1 \pmod{11} by the definition of congruence.
  3. Let 0≤i≤k0 \le i \le k. By step 2 and compatibility with powers, 10i≡(−1)i(mod11)10^i \equiv (-1)^i \pmod{11}.
  4. Since di≡di(mod11)d_i \equiv d_i \pmod{11}, step 3 and compatibility with multiplication give di10i≡(−1)idi(mod11)d_i 10^i \equiv (-1)^i d_i \pmod{11}.
  5. Apply compatibility with addition kk times to the k+1k + 1 congruences of step 4. This gives n≡A(mod11)n \equiv A \pmod{11}.
  6. So there is an integer tt with n−A=11tn - A = 11 t.
  7. If 11∣A11 \mid A, say A=11sA = 11 s, then n=A+11t=11(s+t)n = A + 11 t = 11 (s + t), so 11∣n11 \mid n.
  8. If 11∣n11 \mid n, say n=11mn = 11 m, then A=n−11t=11(m−t)A = n - 11 t = 11 (m - t), so 11∣A11 \mid A.
  9. By steps 7 and 8, 11∣n11 \mid n if and only if 11∣d0−d1+d2−⋯+(−1)kdk11 \mid d_0 - d_1 + d_2 - \dots + (-1)^k d_k.

Idea

Since 10=11−110 = 11 - 1, the number 1010 acts like −1-1 modulo 1111. So the powers of 1010 act like 1,−1,1,−1,…1, -1, 1, -1, \dots, and the number is congruent to its alternating digit sum.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 9 pages in order. The foundations come first. The path takes the proofs Proof that congruence is compatible with addition, Proof that congruence is compatible with multiplication, Proof that congruence is compatible with powers.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
