Proof

We check in turn that Tˉ\bar T is well defined, linear, injective and surjective.

  1. Let K=ker⁡TK = \ker T, the kernel of the linear map TT. It is a subspace of VV: T(0)=0T(0) = 0, and T(u)=T(v)=0T(u) = T(v) = 0 gives T(u+av)=0T(u + av) = 0 for a∈Fa \in F.
  2. The image im⁡T\im T is a subspace of WW: it contains T(0)=0T(0) = 0, and T(u)+aT(v)=T(u+av)T(u) + a T(v) = T(u + av) lies in it.
  3. For x,y∈Vx, y \in V, we have x+K=y+Kx + K = y + K if and only if x−y∈Kx - y \in K. If x+K=y+Kx + K = y + K, then x=x+0∈y+Kx = x + 0 \in y + K, so x−y∈Kx - y \in K.
  4. Conversely, if x−y=k0∈Kx - y = k_0 \in K, then x+k=y+(k0+k)x + k = y + (k_0 + k) and y+k=x+(k−k0)y + k = x + (k - k_0) for each k∈Kk \in K. So x+K=y+Kx + K = y + K.
  5. Tˉ\bar T is well defined. If v+K=v′+Kv + K = v' + K, then v−v′∈Kv - v' \in K by step 3, so T(v)−T(v′)=T(v−v′)=0T(v) - T(v') = T(v - v') = 0. Thus T(v)=T(v′)T(v) = T(v').
  6. Each value T(v)T(v) lies in im⁡T\im T, so Tˉ\bar T is a map from the quotient space V/KV / K to im⁡T\im T.
  7. Tˉ\bar T is linear. By the operations of V/KV / K, Tˉ((u+K)+(v+K))=Tˉ((u+v)+K)=T(u+v)=T(u)+T(v)\bar T((u + K) + (v + K)) = \bar T((u + v) + K) = T(u + v) = T(u) + T(v). The last sum is Tˉ(u+K)+Tˉ(v+K)\bar T(u + K) + \bar T(v + K).
  8. Likewise, for a∈Fa \in F, Tˉ(a(v+K))=Tˉ(av+K)=T(av)=a T(v)=a Tˉ(v+K)\bar T(a(v + K)) = \bar T(av + K) = T(av) = a\, T(v) = a\, \bar T(v + K).
  9. Tˉ\bar T is surjective. Each element of im⁡T\im T is T(v)T(v) for some v∈Vv \in V, and T(v)=Tˉ(v+K)T(v) = \bar T(v + K).
  10. The zero vector of V/KV / K is 0+K0 + K, since (0+K)+(v+K)=v+K(0 + K) + (v + K) = v + K for all v∈Vv \in V.
  11. Tˉ\bar T has trivial kernel. If Tˉ(v+K)=0\bar T(v + K) = 0, then T(v)=0T(v) = 0, so v−0∈Kv - 0 \in K. By step 4, v+K=0+Kv + K = 0 + K.
  12. By the kernel criterion, Tˉ\bar T is injective.
  13. By steps 7 to 12, Tˉ\bar T is a bijective linear map, that is, a linear isomorphism from V/ker⁡TV / \ker T onto im⁡T\im T.

Idea

Two vectors have the same image under TT exactly when they differ by an element of the kernel. So TT gives a well-defined map on cosets of the kernel, and this map can no longer merge distinct cosets. Its image is the image of TT.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 12 pages in order. The foundations come first. The path takes the proof Proof that a linear map is injective iff its kernel is trivial.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
