Proof

We build the map V/W→V/UV / W \to V / U with the universal property and apply the first isomorphism theorem.

  1. For a subspace XX of VV and x,y∈Vx, y \in V, we have x+X=y+Xx + X = y + X if and only if x−y∈Xx - y \in X. If x+X=y+Xx + X = y + X, then x=x+0∈y+Xx = x + 0 \in y + X, so x−y∈Xx - y \in X.
  2. Conversely, if x−y=z0∈Xx - y = z_0 \in X, then x+z=y+(z0+z)x + z = y + (z_0 + z) and y+z=x+(z−z0)y + z = x + (z - z_0) for each z∈Xz \in X. So x+X=y+Xx + X = y + X.
  3. In particular, the zero vector 0+X0 + X of V/XV / X equals x+Xx + X exactly when x∈Xx \in X.
  4. Let U/W={u+W:u∈U}U / W = \{u + W : u \in U\}. It is a subspace of the quotient space V/WV / W. It contains 0+W0 + W, and (u+W)+a(u′+W)=(u+au′)+W(u + W) + a(u' + W) = (u + au') + W with u+au′∈Uu + au' \in U.
  5. Let πU ⁣:V→V/U\pi_U \colon V \to V / U be the quotient map, πU(v)=v+U\pi_U(v) = v + U. It is a linear map by the operations of V/UV / U.
  6. By step 3, the kernel of πU\pi_U is UU, which contains WW.
  7. By the universal property of the quotient, there is a linear map φ ⁣:V/W→V/U\varphi \colon V / W \to V / U with φ(v+W)=v+U\varphi(v + W) = v + U for all v∈Vv \in V.
  8. φ\varphi is surjective, since each v+Uv + U equals φ(v+W)\varphi(v + W). So the image of φ\varphi is V/UV / U.
  9. The kernel of φ\varphi is U/WU / W. If u∈Uu \in U, then φ(u+W)=u+U=0+U\varphi(u + W) = u + U = 0 + U by step 3.
  10. Conversely, let φ(v+W)=0+U\varphi(v + W) = 0 + U. Then v∈Uv \in U by step 3, so v+W∈U/Wv + W \in U / W.
  11. By the first isomorphism theorem, the map (V/W)/ker⁡φ→im⁡φ(V / W)/\ker \varphi \to \im \varphi, (v+W)+ker⁡φ↦φ(v+W)(v + W) + \ker \varphi \mapsto \varphi(v + W), is well defined and a linear isomorphism.
  12. By steps 8 to 10, this is the map (V/W)/(U/W)→V/U(V / W)/(U / W) \to V / U, (v+W)+U/W↦v+U(v + W) + U/W \mapsto v + U. So this map is well defined and a linear isomorphism.

Idea

Since W⊆UW \subseteq U, cosets of WW are finer than cosets of UU, so each coset v+Wv + W lies in a single coset v+Uv + U. This gives a surjective map V/W→V/UV / W \to V / U. It sends v+Wv + W to zero exactly when v∈Uv \in U, so its kernel is U/WU / W.
