Proof of the Pythagorean theorem and its converse with the dot product
Builds on TriangleAngle at a pointEuclidean distanceLength of a vectorDot productVectors are perpendicular if and only if their dot product is zero
Proof
We expand a squared length, which proves both directions at once.
- Let and . With the Euclidean distance and the length, , and .
- The dot product is bilinear and symmetric. So .
- By steps 1 and 2, holds if and only if .
- The vertices of the triangle are not collinear, so they are distinct. Thus and .
- By definition, the angle is the angle between and . Since both are nonzero, holds if and only if this angle is .
- Steps 3 and 5 give: if and only if .
Idea
The square of the side is the sum of the squares of the other two sides, minus twice a dot product. This correction term vanishes exactly when the two sides at are perpendicular. So one computation gives the theorem and its converse.
