Proof
We reduce the class equation modulo . Let be the identity of .
- First, with . Let be a prime that divides ; one exists since . By Cauchy's theorem, some element of has order .
- Since is a -group, that order is a power of . As is prime, .
- So is the only prime factor of , and by the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. Since , .
- Each positive divisor of is a power of . Indeed, a prime factor of divides . So it divides by Euclid's lemma, and it equals .
- By the class equation, , where are the conjugacy classes with more than one element.
- By the class size formula, , which divides and is greater than .
- By step 4, each is with , so divides it. Also divides , by step 3.
- Therefore divides .
- The centre contains , so . A positive multiple of is at least . So .
Idea
In the class equation every class outside the centre has size a positive power of , and so does the whole group. Modulo these terms vanish, so the number of central elements is a multiple of . It is not zero, because the identity is central, so it is at least .
