P-group

Definition

Let pp be a prime number. A group GG is a pp-group when, for each g∈Gg \in G, the order of gg is pnp^n for some integer n≥0n \geq 0.

Remarks

A finite group is a pp-group if and only if ∣G∣=pk|G| = p^k for some k≥0k \geq 0. One direction uses Lagrange's theorem, and the other direction uses Cauchy's theorem. The dihedral group D4D_4 of order 88 is a 22-group that is not abelian. The trivial group is a pp-group for each prime pp.

Explanations

L1 human

In a pp-group, each element comes back to the identity after a power of pp steps. For finite groups this means that the number of elements is a power of pp. These groups are the building blocks of the Sylow theory.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Laws of exponents in a group statement
  3. Order of an element definition
  4. P-group definition

What depends on this

15 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
