statement theorem
First Sylow theorem
Statement
Let be a finite group, let be a prime number, and let with . Then has a subgroup of order . In particular, has a Sylow p-subgroup.
Remarks
For , this is Cauchy's theorem. Let be the largest power of that divides . A proof by Wielandt lets act by left multiplication on the subsets of of size . For example, a group of order has a subgroup of order and a subgroup of order .
History
Ludwig Sylow proved the Sylow theorems in 1872, and he published them in Mathematische Annalen.
Explanations

The converse of Lagrange's theorem is false in general. But it is true for prime powers: each prime power that divides the order of the group is the order of a subgroup. The largest such subgroups are the Sylow subgroups.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
