statement proposition

Intersection of subgroups is a subgroup

Statement

Let GG be a group and let (Hi)i∈I(H_i)_{i \in I} be a family of subgroups of GG, indexed by a nonempty set II. Then the intersection ⋂i∈IHi\bigcap_{i \in I} H_i is a subgroup of GG.

Remarks

The identity is in each HiH_i, and if a,ba, b are in each HiH_i, then ab−1ab^{-1} is in each HiH_i. The union of two subgroups is in general not a subgroup: in (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +), 2∈2Z2 \in 2\mathbb{Z} and 3∈3Z3 \in 3\mathbb{Z}, but 55 is in neither. The union of two subgroups HH and KK is a subgroup only when H⊆KH \subseteq K or K⊆HK \subseteq H.

Explanations

L1 human

If several subgroups each pass the subgroup test, then their common part also passes it. For example, 2Z∩3Z=6Z2\mathbb{Z} \cap 3\mathbb{Z} = 6\mathbb{Z} in the integers. This fact lets us define the smallest subgroup that contains a given subset.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
